How the succulent salicornia is powering UAE biofuels

'The National' visits Masdar City to learn how a plant could help power an Etihad flight

In January, an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi to Amsterdam was powered on locally made biofuel. The key ingredient? Salicornia plants grown on a two-hectare farm in Masdar City.

The National's Willy Lowry visits the Seawater Energy and Agriculture System farm and speaks to Dr Alejandro Ríos Galvan of the Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium, who is Professor of Practice at Khalifa University of Science and Technology, to see how it works and what home-grown biofuels could power in the future.
