Three people, including a child, were wounded today when a bomb exploded in northern Lebanon, a security official said. Zein al-Alouf, 10, was seriously wounded when the bomb exploded in the mainly Alawite Jabal Mohsen area of the northern port city of Tripoli, the official said. Two adults were moderately wounded in the explosion. The army has launched an investigation into the incident. In recent years, Tripoli has been hit by deadly sectarian violence between the city's Sunni and Alawite communities and by sporadic bombings, mainly targeting the Lebanese army.

In the summer of 2007, the army fought a 15-week battle with the al Qa'eda inspired Fatah al-Islam militia in a Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli that left 400 people dead, including 168 soldiers. * AFP
