Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with Pope Francis at The Vatican on Monday amid increasing tensions between the US administration and officials in Ramallah.

The Palestinian leader briefed the pontiff on the latest developments in Palestine and the implications of the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital after moving its embassy to the city, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

He also briefed him on Israeli violations against the Palestinian people, their land and holy places, particularly in Jerusalem.

The Vatican recognised the State of Palestine in January 2016. Mr Abbas thanked the Pope for his support of the Palestinian people and their cause.

In 2014, Mr Abbas met with the Pope alongside former Israeli President Shimon Peres for a joint prayer session for peace in the Middle East.
