GAZA CITY // Hamas forces seized the leaders of Fatah in Gaza early today, Fatah officials said, upping the stakes in a week of tit-for-tat arrests between the bitter Palestinian rivals.
Hamas security officers seized about 15 senior Fatah members from their homes in the roundup, the Fatah officials said. They said the men arrested today include three Fatah-affiliated district governors and the two highest Gaza representatives of the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri would not confirm the number or the identity of those arrested, but said the arrests were a response to Fatah's seizures of "Hamas political leaders" in the West Bank.
Abdullah Abdullah, a Fatah legislator in the West Bank, condemned the arrests as an attempt to "perpetuate division" between among Palestinians.
The two Palestinian organisations have engaged in a bitter and often violent rivalry for several years, culminating in Hamas' violent takeover of Gaza one year ago. Fatah's power in Gaza was largely erased and it was left in control only of the West Bank. Both groups have periodically carried out arrest sweeps targeting rivals in the territories they control. Several of the men arrested by Hamas today had already been seized in the past and later released.
The new Hamas clampdown was sparked by a mysterious explosion in Gaza, on July 25, that killed five Hamas members and a six-year-old girl. Hamas blamed Fatah for the blast and began rounding up Fatah men. Fatah denied the charge and launched its own retaliatory clampdown targeting Hamas men in the West Bank.
Fatah says more than 200 of its men have been seized over the past week. Hamas has refused to reveal how many arrests have been made. Fatah has arrested roughly the same number of Hamas men in the West Bank. Mr Abbas issued an order yesterday to free the detainees being held by Fatah, but none have been released yet.

US households add $601bn of debt in 2019
American households borrowed another $601 billion (Dh2.2bn) in 2019, the largest yearly gain since 2007, just before the global financial crisis, according to February data from the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
Fuelled by rising mortgage debt as homebuyers continued to take advantage of low interest rates, the increase last year brought total household debt to a record high, surpassing the previous peak reached in 2008 just before the market crash, according to the report.
Following the 22nd straight quarter of growth, American household debt swelled to $14.15 trillion by the end of 2019, the New York Fed said in its quarterly report.
In the final three months of the year, new home loans jumped to their highest volume since the fourth quarter of 2005, while credit cards and auto loans also added to the increase.
The bad debt load is taking its toll on some households, and the New York Fed warned that more and more credit card borrowers — particularly young people — were falling behind on their payments.
"Younger borrowers, who are disproportionately likely to have credit cards and student loans as their primary form of debt, struggle more than others with on-time repayment," New York Fed researchers said.
