Gimme shelter: Pets find haven at critter motel

Egyptian animal welfare professional Ashraf Saber has opened a place for pets to have their own holiday when their owners go away

Ashraf Saber, who had been working in the animal welfare field for 15 years, decided to open the pets motel in 2018, after the shelter of the Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt was closed. EPA

The motel is hosting pets when their owners cannot secure a place for them whenever they are travelling. EPA

Saber wants to expand the motel and be able to have more playing areas for the dogs and cats. EPA

As well as the motel, there is also a shelter for stray animals who have been rescued. EPA

Currently, the motel hosts around 50 cats and 25 dogs. EPA

The motel employs five workers who operate the place 24 hours a day, every day of the year. EPA

Saber does not accept donations from owners, but charges owners 50 Egyptian pounds (Dh10.5) per night. EPA
