Iran's malign influence in the region has been checked by the United States and its Middle Eastern allies.
After a brief hiatus where Iran was allowed a freer hand by the US, it is facing the return of sanctions over its actions.
The Iran nuclear deal, negotiated by the previous Obama administration along with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, and the EU, and known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, has been dumped by the US President Donald Trump.
