Kuwait welcomes home Emir after hospital treatment

Kuwait’s famous bulbous towers lit up on Wednesday evening with an image of Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad alongside a message welcoming him home after the nonagenarian leader returned from medical treatment abroad.

Sheikh Sabah returned to Kuwait city on Wednesday after undergoing hospital treatment in the United States, state-media agency KUNA reported.

The Emir’s office reported in August that the leader had suffered a health setback, without providing details. He later travelled to the US to meet with President Donald Trump but the meeting was cancelled when Sheikh Sabah was admitted to hospital.

KUNA reported that the messages of good health projected on Kuwait Towers were replicated across the country with billboards going up around the country showing messages of support for the country’s leaders.

His image was also shown at a local football game alongside a message welcoming Sheikh Sabah home.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, sent the Kuwaiti leader a message on Wednesday, saying he was pleased for the safe return of Sheikh Sabah to “his family and loved ones.”

"God bless your country and your people," he said on Twitter, wishing Sheikh Sabah good health and wellness.

Sheikh Mohammed shared a video showing Sheikh Sabah's plane arriving in Kuwait and highlights from his visit to the UAE in 2014 - set to a song by Emirati singer Hussain Al Jassmi titled I love Kuwait. The tweet was accompanied with the hashtag "The UAE loves the Kuwaiti Emir" in Arabic.

Sheikh Sabah has led the country since 2006 after serving as foreign minister for four decades, prime minister and other official posts. His background in diplomacy has seen him take an active role in the Gulf Cooperation Council and as an international mediator in regional crisis from the Yemen war to UN summits.
