George Floyd killing: Derek Chauvin has murder charge upgraded

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on Wednesday announced that Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who was arrested in the killing of George Floyd, is now charged with second-degree murder.

The charge has been increased from one of third-degree murder, which was laid last Friday.

Mr Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes.

Three other former Minneapolis police officers – Tou Thao, Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane, who were with Mr Chauvin at the time of the killing – were charged on Wednesday for aiding and abetting murder.

German officials investigating a 43-year-old man over the death of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared in Portugal aged only three, believe she is dead.

Her parents had said on Thursday that the announcement of a new suspect was a potentially highly significant development in the 13-year worldwide hunt for their daughter.

"The public prosecutor's office in Braunschweig is investigating a 43-year-old German national on suspicion of murder. From this you can see that we assume that the girl is dead," Braunschweig state prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said.

Madeleine disappeared from her bedroom on May 3, 2007, during a family holiday in the Algarve while her parents were dining with friends nearby in the resort of Praia da Luz.

There was solidarity, sadness and anger in London on Wednesday as thousands of mostly young people gathered to protest against the death of George Floyd in US police custody.

"I've seen the video going around on social media and it's genuinely a collective trauma," said Sharleen, 18, who joined the protest in Hyde Park.

Mr Floyd, an unarmed African-American man, died on May 25 in Minneapolis after a white policeman knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

The incident, which was captured on camera, has sparked violent protests across the US and demonstrations around the world.

UN creates political mission in Sudan to support transition

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted two resolutions to create a mission in Sudan to support the country's political transition and extend the mandate of peacekeepers in Darfur, diplomats said.

The resolution on the new United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (Unitams) was drafted by Britain and Germany.

The mission was established "for an initial period of 12 months", according to the text of the resolution, which asks Secretary General Antonio Guterres to quickly name an envoy to head the mission.
