Egyptian student in UK dies after brutal attack

An Egyptian student in the UK has died one month after being attacked in a suspected hate-crime.
Mariam Moustafa, 18, was studying engineering at Nottingham college and living in the town of Beeston with her family.
Ms Moustafa had been shopping in Nottingham's busy Parliament Street when was attacked on February 20th by a group of 10 girls. Following the attack, she was taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, but quickly discharged. After her release from hospital she was placed into an induced coma. However, she died from wounds sustained in the attack on Wednesday.
In a video posed to social media, her mother claimed the attack was racially motivated, and not the first time Ms Moustafa had been attacked, and she was critical of the authorities' response. "Four months ago, two of the same 10 women abused my daughter in the street with no specific reason. We went to the police station and issued an official complaint; however, nothing happened," 
On March 3, Egypt's Attorney General Nabil Sadek launched an official investigation into the assault.
Egyptian Ambassador to the UK Nasser Kamel told Egyptian TV that the perpetrators had been identified. "The perpetrators are known to the British authorities, and soon they will be charged of killing Mariam".
A spokesperson for Nottingham college, where she was studying paid tribute to Ms Moustafa. "Mariam was a well-liked and able engineering student at our Highfields campus with strong aspirations for her future studies and eventual career.
"Mariam was a keen student, who worked hard in both theory and practical sessions and was doing very well on her course."
Mariam's father, Hatem Abdel Salam told Middle East Eye that the he believed the attack was racially motivated. "Her name is Mariam Mostafa, and not Cathy Johnson. If my daughter was English, they [British authorities] would not have dealt with her in this way.
"We have had no support from the British authorities or police," he added.
However, Nottingham Police stressed there was no evidence the attack was racially motivated. A statement released on Thursday read "At this time, from our investigation, there is no information to suggest that the assault was motivated by hate, but we continue to keep an open mind.
"We would also like to remind people that this is an active ongoing investigation and legal proceedings are active.
"As such, we would urge people to be careful when posting any prejudicial comments on social media as these could place you in contempt of court."
