An explosion in southern Germany on Friday injured at least five people and seriously damaged a building used by the Bavarian Red Cross, which has apartments above.

The dpa news agency reported that a defective gas line was the suspected cause of the explosion, which happened at about 6am in the town of Memmingen.

A 55-year-old female cleaner who worked at the Red Cross was seriously injured and flown by helicopter for treatment.

Local authorities said other explosions could happen and evacuated the area. They said that considering the force of the explosion it was lucky no one was killed.
