Wise up to Pinoy savings scheme, UAE Filipinos urged

ABU DHABI // An international campaign to encourage expatriate Filipinos and their families to save and invest in their country will be launched at Abu Dhabi National Theatre on Friday.

Pinoy Wise is a network of national and local government agencies, migrant organisations, NGOs, cooperatives and remittance companies that support financial education and address the concerns of migrants and families.

At the event, investment opportunities in various agribusinesses, cooperatives and eco-tourism and agritourism will be offered by the private and public sector.

"The agricultural sector is the most negatively affected by migration," said Grace Princesa, the Philippine ambassador to the UAE.

The agribusiness and marketing assistance services of the Philippine agriculture department and representatives from six provinces in the Philippines will assist Filipinos at the venue.

Atikha, a non-governmental organisation in Manila, will hold counselling sessions that address family issues that lead to estrangement and typically drain their resources.

"Atikha also helps Filipinos deal with the social cost of migration, particularly feminised migration," Ms Princesa said.

The UAE was chosen as the pilot country of the Pinoy Wise Movement due to the large number of Filipinos and the support of the host government, said Estrella Dizon-Anonuevo, Atikha's executive director.

In January last year, the UAE Ministry of Labour ran a financial literacy "training of trainers" event in Dubai for migrants from the Philippines, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The ministry invited Atikha to conduct the training.

Another Pinoy Wise event will be held in Dubai on November 30.
