DUBAI // The family of a British sailor and father of two who went missing in Dubai are appealing to the public to help find him.
Leading Seaman Timothy MacColl, 27, did not return to the Royal Navy warship HMS Westminster, on which he was serving, before it left the country on Thursday.
“It is completely out of character for him not to contact us,” his wife, Rachel MacColl, told the Press Association.
“We are appealing to the people of Dubai and reaching out to the large expat community to help us find Timmy and raise awareness.”
The couple are expecting their third child in October. The family said Mr MacColl was last seen by a crew member, getting into a taxi alone after leaving a cafe in the Bur Dubai area at 2am on Sunday.
He has been described as white, about 1.7 metres tall with short, brown hair and a broad Scottish accent. He was wearing a red T-shirt, dark long shorts and white trainers when last seen, PA said.
Mr MacColl is based in Gosport, Hampshire but was originally from Scotland.
“We are desperately worried,” said Mrs MacColl in an appeal published in British media yesterday. “Checks have been made with hospitals, prisons, police stations, medical stations and mortuaries and there is no record of him and no sightings so far.
“I last spoke with Timmy at midday on Saturday and he was in really good spirits and looking forward to speaking with the children on Skype on Sunday. That call never happened.
“We are completely at a loss and going crazy with worry. Wherever Timmy is, I know he wants to be found, he will want us to find him. We need people to help us do that."
A British ministry of defence spokesman said: “We can confirm that a member of the HMS Westminster’s crew is missing in Dubai. We have reported this to local authorities and they are treating it as a missing person event.”
A senior officer with the Dubai Police confirmed a missing persons report had been filed and the British Embassy said it was aware a UK national was missing.

What is graphene?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged like honeycomb.
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were "playing about" with sticky tape and graphite - the material used as "lead" in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But as they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment had led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
At the time, many believed it was impossible for such thin crystalline materials to be stable. But examined under a microscope, the material remained stable, and when tested was found to have incredible properties.
It is many times times stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. It is electrically and thermally conductive but also transparent. The world's first 2D material, it is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair.
But the 'sticky tape' method would not work on an industrial scale. Since then, scientists have been working on manufacturing graphene, to make use of its incredible properties.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their discovery meant physicists could study a new class of two-dimensional materials with unique properties.
