DUBAI // A wife accused of beating up her husband said that she was the one assaulted and had to go to hospital for treatment after the attack, a court heard.
Iraqi S K, 16, said she had been married for about 15 months and claimed husband often beat her up using a belt from his fire-fighting gear.
“I’m not guilty. We have many problems and we have a divorce case in court. He assaults me and I asked him to return to my family’s house,” S K said.
She said on the day of the incident, April 4, her husband called her a prostitute, attacked her and she was forced to get treatment in hospital.
“On that day I told him I wanted to go to my parent’s home. He assaulted me and insulted me saying that I was a prostitute,” she said.
The woman added that while in the car with him, he assaulted her again. “I got out of the car and went to my family’s house and then went to the hospital for treatment,” she said.
“I did not assault him and I don’t know why he is claiming I did.
“On that day, I had a conversation with him because I discovered he had several relations. The argument escalated and he beat me up,” S K said.
She said she tried to push him away but failed. “I suffered difficulty in breathing and bruises due to the assault.”
When asked about the scratches on her husband’s hands and chest, she denied causing them and said she did not know how they happened.
She was not present at the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours to face charges on Wednesday and the next hearing was set for January 21.
