ABU DHABI // The race volunteer hit by a bicycle during the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon is likely to return to the UK within weeks to continue her rehabilitation.
Carly Williams, 27, a Briton, was working at an aid station during the competition on March 3 when a professional triathlete, Andrew Starykowicz, ran into her.
She suffered severe head injuries and was in intensive care at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City for several weeks.
Last week, Paul Coackley, principal of the British School Al Khubairat, where Miss Williams is a physical education teacher, said she was out of intensive care and her surgery had gone well.
He said yesterday that she spent the weekend out of the hospital.
"Miss Williams continues to progress," Mr Coackley said.
"She is able to walk about and converse normally, although, as you can imagine, she tires extremely easily."
Mr Starykowicz, 29, an American, suffered a broken shoulder in the accident.
A spokesman for the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon said Mr Starykowicz returned to the US to continue his rehabilitation, having co-operated fully with police before leaving the Emirates.
