ABU DHABI // Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid led calls yesterday for Emiratis to participate fully in the FNC elections on Saturday.
The Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai reaffirmed a call from the President, Sheikh Khalifa, for "an effective and massive participation in the elections".
Sheikh Mohammed urged candidates to remember their duty to their country, should they win. "It is also important to take matters seriously, especially issues of national concern, which should not be diluted or passed through quickly," he said.
His sentiments were shared by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chair of the General Women's Union and of the Family Development Foundation. "I call upon each woman voter to exercise her electoral right and hold the future of our country dear when electing representatives to the next FNC," Sheikha Fatima said.
Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for FNC Affairs and Chairman of the National Election Committee, said Sheikh Khalifa's call for broad participation in the elections "reflects the leadership's commitment to empower the council and enhance political participation".
He said the Government's "consultative approach" was "rooted in the political tradition of the UAE", and said the last FNC had taken up a number of national issues and succeeded in conveying the concerns of citizens.
"The Government responded positively to such efforts, especially to the council's recommendations on draft laws and other issues," Dr Gargash said
