ABU DHABI // The country's willingness to host a regional outpost of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in the UAE is proof of its commitment to law enforcement, Dr Hatem Ali has said.
Dr Ali, the UNODC Representative in Abu Dhabi, described the local judiciary as an authority of a "global standard" and praised the UAE's commitment to criminal justice, according to a report in Al Ittihad, The National's sister Arabic newspaper.
Dr Ali also praised the country's constitutional framework, which he said allowed transparency and integrity to be entrenched in the judiciary.
He made the comments on the sidelines of a three-day regional meeting to combat transnational organised crime, held at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi.
A sub-regional office of the UNODC was first opened in Dubai in 2005 and the UAE agreed in 2008 to open an office in the capital.
