ABU DHABI // An Emirati teenager who is accused of trying to join ISIL has had his case adjourned by the Federal Supreme Court.

S Y A, 19, is accused of seeking to join the extremist group, despite knowing of its actions.

His lawyer, Yousef Al Ali, told the court: “S Y A travelled from Dubai to Amman, Jordan and then to Al Aqabah in September 13, without the knowledge of his parents — who are separated.

“His mother then told his father about his disappearance and he reported that his son was missing to the police two days later.”

On September 17, S Y A was arrested in Al Aqabah, Jordan.

The lawyer requested an adjournment to prepare his defence.

A request to have his client released on bail was rejected by Judge Falah Al Hajeri.

The next hearing will be on September 7.
