Officials at the Ministry of Environment and Water met with representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme and a number of companies to explore the management of substances that contribute to ozone depletion.
Othaibah Al Qayedi, director of chemicals department at the ministry, said the UAE has developed a time-frame for phasing out by 2040 substances that harm the ozone layer.
Ms Al Qayedi said that the exchange of knowledge and expertise during the meeting will help the UAE achieve environmental sustainability.
As a result of the agreement and the follow-up revisions, of which there have been eight there is hope the ozone hole over the Antarctic will recover. Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) are a main chemical exponent of older air conditioners and are being phased our by most developing countries who have signed on to the Montreal Protocol, including the UAE.
