Two men have been accused of deliberately causing damage to a police car while attempting to avoid arrest for charges of possessing and consuming drugs, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Sunday.
A police patrol was dispatched in October last year to arrest an Emirati suspect, aged 44, who was with another Emirati, aged 20, in Al Quoz in Dubai.
“I was assigned to arrest the Emirati suspect, 44-year-old, on charges of possessing, selling and consuming drugs. A warrant to arrest one of the suspects was issued and I was dispatched to Al Quoz area where the 44-year-old suspect was driving a Mercedes car. After trying to stop the suspect’s car, he intentionally crashed against the anti-narcotics police patrol.
"Some police officers got out of the police vehicle and tried to open the doors of the suspect’s car, but they were locked,” said a 25-year-old police officer. Police officers then smashed the car's window , finding two men inside who were in the possession of drugs.
Police seized a red box that contained two needles, three capsules of lyrica – an anti-epileptic medication popular with recreational drug users – and other tools for drug use.
The original suspect denied charges at court and refused to give a urine sample.
The second suspect’s urine tested positive for drug consumption. He confessed to court and his defence lawyer said that he had consumed the drugs for medicinal purposes.
The next hearing will be on January 21.
