Two men were arrested attempting to smuggle more than a kilogram of heroin in their stomachs while entering the UAE.
The men – both of Asian origin – were carrying 186 capsules, weighing 1.3kg, between them, according to Colonel Adnan Al Zaabi, director of the anti-narcotics department at RAK police.
After police were tipped off about the smuggling attempt, a team was assembled to look out for the men at one of the country’s borders.
“They were both arrested after one of them acted suspiciously,” Col Al Zaabi said, who added that the arrest was made in co-operation with Dubai Police and the emirate’s Customs Department.
During questioning, the men admitted to swallowing more than a kilogram of heroin capsules and were taken to Rashid Hospital to have them safely extracted.
The men were referred to public prosecution to face legal action.
