Etihad Airways has awarded a $575 million (Dh2.1 billion) contract to Rolls-Royce to supply engines for eight Airbus 330 aircraft, the company announced today. The A330s, which were part of a larger order for 12 aeroplanes placed at an air show in June 2007, are scheduled for delivery between 2009 and 2011. Etihad did not offer a reason for why it chose Rolls-Royce, but pointed out that all 14 Etihad A330s now in service are powered by the company's engines.
"This continuation of our relationship with Rolls-Royce helps us to develop our state-of-the art fleet," James Hogan, the airline's chief executive, said in a statement. Engine contracts for new aircraft are often concluded well after the initial order is placed with the aeroplane maker. According to Rolls-Royce, 53 per cent of A330s in use worldwide are powered by its engines. General Electric and Pratt and Whitney are the company's main competitors.
Rolls-Royce stock rose 8.25 pence this morning in London, to 323.25. The order for 12 planes is separate from a substantially larger order placed by Etihad this year at the Farnborough Air Show, when it requested 55 aircraft from Airbus and 45 from Boeing. cstanton@thenational.ae
