Motorists with traffic fines in Ras Al Khaimah have about 10 days to pay them off to take advantage of a 50 per cent discount offered by police. The scheme was first announced ahead of National Day, when motorists were told they could pay off their fines at the reduced rate between December 2 to 8. The deadline was subsequently pushed back until December 23 and has just been extended again until January 3, 2021. Police said the decision to extend the deadline was made to mark the New Year and "in response to requests from the community". The scheme also aims to "bring happiness to the public" and help reduce their financial burdens, police said. The force called on motorists to take advantage of the discount and pay off their fines before Saturday, January 3. They said the discount applied to all fines that could be paid off using the mobile app – except for offences related to vehicle impoundment, which require the motorist to visit the Traffic and Licensing Services Centre and Vehicle Impoundment Complex in Al Saadi. Anyone who pays off their fines during this period will also have their black points cleared and all fines related to vehicle impoundment waived. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi Police issued a reminder that hi-tech radars to catch out motorists using phones or failing to wear seat belts will go live on January 1. The force released a video on Friday on Instagram stating the new technology will soon be rolled out. The network of radars can automatically detect drivers flouting the rules and uses cameras powered by artificial intelligence. Motorists then will receive a text message detailing the infringement. Under the current laws, motorists caught using their mobile phones while driving face fines of at least Dh800 and can receive four black points on their licence.
