DUBAI // Hundreds of new speed cameras being installed on Dubai's Sheikh Zayed Road, from Jebel Ali to Airport Road, will capture film footage for use as police evidence, as well as taking still photographs of speeding motorists. The green and blue cameras that can be seen next to radar stations on the verges of Sheikh Zayed Road and other major roads are part of a wireless network of speed cameras.
Dubai Police has confirmed some of the cameras, which can be moved unlike the older devices, are already in place and have helped police issue fines and arrest people committing traffic offences. "The cameras can monitor many things in different ways; take multiple pictures between speed radars and film footage," a police spokesman said yesterday. The new cameras will be incorporated into the existing system at traffic signals and on motorways, police said. Once completely installed, the system will more than double the 232 cameras in action at traffic lights and some highways.
Of the 232 already in place, 12 are in the Al Shindagha Tunnel, 111 in the Airport Tunnel and 109 on highways and at junctions with traffic lights. shafez@thenational.ae
