SHARJAH // A teenager arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run told police he could not avoid the victim because of the speed he was travelling at.
The 50-year-old Syrian suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car while crossing Al Dhaid Road last Wednesday, at around 8pm. He died in hospital the following day.
Police received notification of the incident from a witness who saw the car leave the scene. Officers tracked down the vehicle to a garage and arrested the 16-year-old driver.
The teen told officers he had been driving from Al Dhaid City to Weshah when he saw the man crossing the road.
Police urged pedestrians to only cross roads at designated areas and asked drivers to adhere to the speed limit.
They also asked parents to ensure their children don’t drive vehicles if they do not own a driving license.
