Four Emirati family members killed in UAQ car crash

UMM AL QUWAIN // A high-ranking police officer has urged all motorists to drive carefully and refrain from speeding after four members of one family were killed on Thursday.

Both vehicles were in the fast lane on Sheikh Zayed Road, when one car tried to overtake the other, Lt Col Saeed Obaid, the director of the traffic and patrols department at UAQ Police, said.

The car carrying the family veered off the road, after being hit by the other driver, before colliding with a barrier and a lamppost.

A man, his wife, her sister, and the couple’s daughter, all died at the scene. The family’s six-year-old son survived with minor injuries and was treated at Al Dhaid Hospital, in Sharjah.

The speeding motorist who allegedly caused the collision was arrested and has since been referred to UAQ Traffic Public Prosecution. He sustained no injuries.

“These accidents happen all over the world, but the adherence to the speed limit and traffic laws, including not driving recklessly, are the necessities that we appeal all drivers to adhere to,” the colonel said.
