DUBAI // A limited-edition limousine owned by the former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat is for sale – a snip at Dh400,000.
The car, a gift from the US president Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, has been used for the past 12 years as a weekend runabout, and has been listed on the classifieds website Dubizzle.
It is one of only 900 Cadillac S75 Fleetwood Limos made. Jimi Hendrix had one, as did the Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek.
The owner is Egyptian Hisham Refaat, 37, who bought it in 2002 at a Mubarak-era auction at the presidential palace in Cairo.
“The car has a lot of historical value,” Mr Refaat said.
“I’m surprised it didn’t end up in a museum but I guess in Egypt we have our share of old stuff so the museums are full.”
“I sometimes use it on a weekend to drive around,” Mr Refaat said. “It attracts a lot of attention. When there’s a wedding in the family I use it for the ceremony.”
He said the vehicle was in top condition, including the paintwork and upholstery.
The car, which is in Cairo, does not have bulletproof glass but it does have electric windows and an AM-FM radio.
Sadat was the third president of Egypt and a Nobel laureate. He was assassinated in 1981.
Dubizzle is no stranger to unusual advertisements. Last month a private jet was listed on the site. In the past it has been used to sell items including a private island and a somewhat dubious time machine.
“A car ad like this one is a testament to the mature level Dubizzle service has reached,” said Osman Bhurgri, marketing manager for vehicles in the UAE at the classifieds site.
“Besides being a market place for second-hand cars, our motors section is also the go-to place to discover some amazing used automotive gems.”

What is a virtual bank?
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority defines it as a bank that delivers services through the internet or other electronic channels instead of physical branches. That means not only facilitating payments but accepting deposits and making loans, just like traditional ones. Other terms used interchangeably include digital or digital-only banks or neobanks. By contrast, so-called digital wallets or e-wallets such as Apple Pay, PayPal or Google Pay usually serve as intermediaries between a consumer’s traditional account or credit card and a merchant, usually via a smartphone or computer.
What’s the draw in Asia?
Hundreds of millions of people under-served by traditional institutions, for one thing. Multitasking pays off for money goals
Tackling money goals one at a time cost financial literacy expert Barbara O'Neill at least $1 million.
That's how much Ms O'Neill, a distinguished professor at Rutgers University in the US, figures she lost by starting saving for retirement only after she had created an emergency fund, bought a car with cash and purchased a home.
"I tell students that eventually, 30 years later, I hit the million-dollar mark, but I could've had $2 million," Ms O'Neill says.
Too often, financial experts say, people want to attack their money goals one at a time: "As soon as I pay off my credit card debt, then I'll start saving for a home," or, "As soon as I pay off my student loan debt, then I'll start saving for retirement"."
People do not realise how costly the words "as soon as" can be. Paying off debt is a worthy goal, but it should not come at the expense of other goals, particularly saving for retirement. The sooner money is contributed, the longer it can benefit from compounded returns. Compounded returns are when your investment gains earn their own gains, which can dramatically increase your balances over time.
"By putting off saving for the future, you are really inhibiting yourself from benefiting from that wonderful magic," says Kimberly Zimmerman Rand , an accredited financial counsellor and principal at Dragonfly Financial Solutions in Boston. "If you can start saving today ... you are going to have a lot more five years from now than if you decide to pay off debt for three years and start saving in year four."

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
