FUJAIRAH // The first pedestrian bridge in Fujairah city is being built on Al Kuwait road and will link Al Faseel with Sakamkam, to reduce accidents and increase road safety.
The project will cost Dh1.7million and is expected to be completed by the end of next month, according to FujSeng Construction LLC, the project managing company.
“This project is part of our strategic plan to provide safe passageways for pedestrians and reduce the number of accidents,” said Omar Flaete, traffic engineer at Fujairah Police.
The footbridge will link the new and old residential areas in Sakamkam with a college, a shopping mall and a mosque located in Al Faseel.
“Residents of Sakamkam will stop having a problem when they want to cross over the street to visit the Century shopping mall, the mosque or the higher colleges of technology in Al Faseel area. Moving from one side to the other will become much easier and safer for residents,” Mr Flaete said.
Jean Planas, 26, a Filipina who lives in Sakamkam and works at a beauty centre in Al Faseel, said that the bridge would make her life easier.
“I work in Al Faseel ... across the street, each day I walk from my home to the nearest roundabout and cross the road from there due to the lack of crosswalks in the street. It takes me 20 minutes to arrive when it should take only 10. This bridge will make my life easier and I will stop worrying about walking too much under the burning sun,” Ms Planas said.
A 31-year-old Emirati motorist said that the bridge would reduce accidents and ensure a safe passage for pedestrians
“People are forced to cross the road from any place because of the lack of crosswalks. In order not to walk long distances to reach the traffic light or the roundabout, they risk their lives and jump over the concrete barriers to cross the road.
“This bridge will help residents and will keep them safe,” Rashed Al Yamahi said.
