DUBAI // Almost 10,000 fines were issued to minibus drivers in the first five months of the year, Dubai Police said.
Col Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic, called on the drivers to abide by traffic laws and said the safety of the motorists and bus passengers is the companies’ responsibility.
“Companies must make sure that the minibuses are safe and that their drivers are not carrying more passengers than they should,” he said. “The traffic department will take strict measures against those breaking the law and putting themselves and others in danger.
“Some of these buses carrying metal tools and pipes, gas and oxygen can lead to disastrous consequences if involved in a road incident.”
The colonel also said some cases this year involved buses carrying passengers in the baggage area.
Dubai Police recorded 778 fines in January, 1,601 in February, 1,881 in March, 2,976 in April and 2,544 in May.
