Police caught dozens of motorists who failed to give way to emergency vehicles in Abu Dhabi last year. Abu Dhabi Police issued 126 fines to drivers who held up ambulances, police cars, civil defence vehicles and official motorcades in 2020. Offenders can be fined Dh3,000, receive six black points on their licence and have their vehicle impounded for 30 days. Police urged motorists to give way to emergency vehicles in a safe and timely manner to allow them to reach accident scenes more quickly. The force delivered a safety message on its social media platforms to drive home the importance of aiding emergency workers in the line of duty. Police warned against "negative behaviour" that would add to response times to road accidents, delay treatment for those who are injured and cost precious time needed to fight a fire. They have used social media in recent years for a series of awareness campaigns aimed at bolstering road safety in the capital.
