Dh5m surveillance camera plan to boost safety on Fujairah highway

Cameras will be set up along the Sheikh Khalifa motorway to keep speeding motorists in check as authorities seek to cut down on road deaths and traffic accidents after a number of fatalities.

Surveillance cameras will be set up along Fujairah’s Sheikh Khalifa motorway in a bid to boost safety after a number of deaths on the busy road.

The Dh5 million plan will help keep speeding motorists in check, a source from the Ministry of Public Works told Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.

People living in Fujairah had called on the authorities to speed up the process of making the road safer and to reduce traffic accidents. The plan to install cameras comes after other safety issues, such as rock slides, were resolved.

Authorities have also been asked to build first-aid centres and establish rescue units along the motorway, especially where it connects with the Maliha-Kalba road, where the majority of serious accidents occur.

Six Pakistani men were killed when their Nissan left the Maliha-Kalba road, overturned and burst into flames on August 10, the second day of Eid Al Fitr, and Al Ittihad reported that three female Emiratis from the same family were killed recently in a crash on the same stretch of road.
