ABU DHABI // A traffic control system has been installed to improve traffic flow at Mohammed bin Zayed City’s 40 junctions, the Department of Transport announced on Sunday.

The Dh75 million project involved installing intelligent and integrated traffic and pedestrian signals and a traffic video surveillance systems. The aim is to reduce recurring congestion and to boost safety levels for all road users, particularly at traffic junctions.

The system also ensures faster response to non-recurring congestion, reduce fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and noise.

“This innovative system enables traffic signals to provide real-time response to traffic via an advanced central control system that is installed in all Mohammed bin Zayed City intersections,” said Hamad Al Afeefi, acting director general of traffic and management and technology at DoT.

"The system is also linked to advanced CCTV networks and ground sensors that have been deployed in the city. It uses an internal simulation system to analyse real-time traffic based on previous data and projected traffic volumes at these signals."

Data collected from road network surveillance is used to improve traffic singals network timing and performance, reduce time spent on each trip and minimise waiting time at each traffic junction.
