DUBAI // Contests to encourage government officials to use public transport will be part of the sixth Public Transport Day on Sunday coinciding with RTA’s 10th anniversary.
Sports contests at the Burj Plaza and awards for frequent users of public transport will also be presented.
“The share of public transport has soared from 6 per cent in 2006 to 14 per cent in 2014 and the RTA is seeking to push up this share to 20 per cent by 2020,” said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the RTA’s board of executive directors.
Comprising the metro, tram, buses, water transport and taxis, public transport usage recorded more than 531 million last year compared to 440.67 million riders in 2013.
The average daily ridership of public transport in Dubai was 1.48 million last year compared with 1.3 million riders in 2013.
