Campaign makes Ajman’s roads safer

According to state news agency, WAM, the fall is down to an 'extensive' public awareness campaign to reduce the number of incidents on the roads.

AJMAN // Serious road accidents have been reduced thanks to a safety campaign.

There has also been a 7 per cent drop in pedestrians being run over in the emirate, reported the state news agency Wam.

There were 199 serious accidents last year, down from 203 the previous year, according to Brig Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, deputy commander of Ajman Police.

There were 92 accidents last year in which someone was hit by a vehicle, compared with 99 in 2012.

Fewer on-the-spot tickets were issued to drivers – 59,593, a slight decrease from the previous year.

Offences detected by radars fell by 6 per cent, while impounded vehicles – about 4,090 – rose by 2 per cent.

The number of revoked licenses fell by 44 per cent, from 430 in 2012 to 242 last year.

And there were 17,030 new cars on Ajman’s roads last year from 13,849 the previous year.

Brig Al Nuaimi said 33 high-tech speed cameras had been installed on Ajman’s roads, with plans for more on the Sheikh Khalifa and Sheikh Ammar bridges.

He said Ajman Police were striving to deliver the highest rates of safety to road users.
