ABU DHABI // Speed cameras have been adjusted to monitor the new speed limits that went into effect across the emirate yesterday.
New signs were mounted on roads by Abu Dhabi Municipality to alert motorists to the changes, and a layer of "rough" red concrete has been laid on some roads to slow motorists as they entercity areas with speed-limit changes.
The number of policemen and traffic patrols in the city was increased as well, to make sure motorists comply fully with the new speed limits and the temporary traffic diversions and project sites in internal and external roads.
Speed limits in residential areas have been set between 20kph and 40kph.
There were no modifications made to speed limits in these areas: Abu Dhabi to Al Ain (from the Bani Yas Park Bridge to Al Sadd area); Abu Dhabi to Dubai (from Al Mufraq Bridge to Seeh Shuaib and from Al Shahama to Seeh Shuaib); as well as Suwaihan Road (from Al Shawamikh Bridge to Al Hair).
The red road stretches, 1km long with a speed camera at the end, have been placed at the end of highways, just before urban areas.

The change in road colour and surfacing was announced after studies found a large number of motorists were unaware of speed changes and continued to drive at high speeds in urban areas.
A later study will be conducted by the municipality to check on the effectiveness of the new limits. If the outcome is positive, changes will be made on more roads throughout the country.
A booklet has been published by the municipality called Internal road guide for decreased speeds in the city of Abu Dhabi, which includes all new speed limits.
The speed limits were determined after a study was done on Abu Dhabi roads in co-operation with the Department of Transport, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality and the Municipality of the Western Region.
