Pedestrians urged to use designated walkways, tunnels and bridges

Police in Abu Dhabi have issued a warning to pedestrians over the dangers of crossing roads illegally. 

Police in Abu Dhabi have released shocking footage of reckless pedestrians putting their lives at risk by crossing busy roads unsafely.

The force highlighted the dangers of illegally crossing roads in an Instagram post published in five languages – including Arabic, English and Hindi – in an effort to drive home the vital safety message across the emirate.

In the video, police urge people not to flout traffic regulations and ensure they use pedestrian walkways, tunnels and bridges.

Stark examples in the video include one pedestrian dicing with disaster by dashing across a highway as cars travel at high speed.

In other instances, pedestrians amble across the road, seemingly oblivious to the potential consequences of their actions.

"Abu Dhabi police warns the audience from the dangers of pedestrians crossing through undesignated areas to avoid accidents," the Police say in the video.

“We also urge pedestrians to follow the correct rules by using pedestrian crossings, tunnels, and bridges for their safety.

“Crossing roads at undesignated spots may result in run-over accidents.”

According to UAE traffic law, pedestrians who fail to abide by traffic signals, or who cross the road from undesignated areas, face a fine of Dh400.

In 2017, more than 50,000 fines were issued to pedestrians for illegally crossing the capital's roads.
