ABU DHABI // The sole survivor of a crash in Oman that killed five members of an Emirati family – including her husband – suffered only a broken arm.

Hamida Al Makhashen, 52, was in good physical condition when she arrived at Nizwa Hospital in Muscat, staff said, and was treated for several hours before being flown to the UAE.

The three-car crash killed a girl, aged 9, two women and two men. Their Lexus 4x4 hit a lorry head-on in Dakhiliya, about 220 kilometres from Muscat, and a pick-up truck.

The car, being driven to Salalah, was destroyed on impact.

Salama Al Menhali, 9, UAE University student Fatima bin Madi, 20, Wafa Al Menhali, 48, Ali bin Madi, and Mrs Makhashen’s husband Ahmad Al Menhali, 60, were buried in Abu Dhabi’s Baniyas cemetery on Saturday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, on Sunday offered his condolences to the family of Ahmad Al Menhali.

Mr Al Menhali was a retired brigadier general.
