Toyota and Lexus announce global recall

About 2,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles are being recalled in the UAE for a possible power steering problem.

DUBAI // Toyota and Lexus have announced a recall of almost 2,000 vehicles in the UAE because of a problem that could lead to steering difficulties.

The move is part of a worldwide recall of 550,000 vehicles, by far most of them in North America, but including 10,000 in the Middle East.

The affected models in the Emirates are the 2004 Toyota Avalon and Camry, and the Lexus RX330 and ES300.

Owners are being told to contact local dealers to have their vehicles inspected. Mechanics will check and possibly replace the crankshaft pulley - part of the power steering mechanism - on the V6 cars.

"We at Al-Futtaim Motors are working closely with Toyota Motor Corporation and are already starting the process of contacting all customers who may have potentially affected units in the coming few days so their vehicles can be inspected," said Simon Frith, the managing director of Al-Futtaim Motors, which is the UAE distributor for Toyota.

Over the past two years, the car maker has had a series of worldwide recalls of as many as 14 million vehicles.
