‘Thieves’ who stole housewife’s jewellery already awaiting trial for similar offence

DUBAI // Two unemployed men broke into a Canadian woman’s home and stole her jewellery, a court heard on Monday.

The Chinese duo, who are both charged with theft, allegedly broke into the home of the 53-year-old housewife and stole diamonds, gold and silver jewellery from her wardrobe after they jumped over the garden wall and used a screwdriver to open the glass door in Bur Dubai.

The Canadian testified that in June 2015, she returned home at 10pm and discovered the following morning that someone stole the jewellery from her unlocked wardrobe, so she reported the incident to police.

An Emirati officer said they noticed a similar pattern of thefts carried out by the Chinese men and found that they were already in custody awaiting trial in another case.

“They confessed to the robbery with another man. They stole the jewellery before getting away in a car driven by the third guy,” said the 34-year-old officer.

At Dubai Criminal Court on Monday, the Chinese men denied a theft charge.

The next hearing is on April 13.
