The National has been recognised with 20 Awards of Excellence at the Society for News Design's annual Best of News Design competition – the foremost such awards in the world.

The international competition attracts more than 8,000 entries from 30 countries. Entrants are considered to be the best-designed newspapers in the world – a tough and competitive field.

The awards are granted for design deemed by the Society for News Design judges to be “truly excellent work, going beyond the technical or aesthetic competency”.

“We are proud to have achieved such a degree of recognition,” said Mohammed Al Otaiba, The National’s Editor-in-Chief. “It is a reward for the amazing levels of creativity that our design department possesses, not to mention the hard work and dedication that converts this creativity into making the newspaper as beautiful and readable as we can.”

Designers Kevin Jeffers, Emma Tracey and Mathew Kurian all achieved recognition, as did the photography of Silvia Razgova. Assistant art director Alex Belman won several awards for his outstanding work. The National’s design department is led by art director Nick Donaldson.

“We will strive to build on this recognition and to produce a paper that continues to please, inform and surprise in its presentation as well as its content,” Al Otaiba said.
