Teenager denies setting speed radar on fire

The teenager had been out with his brother after stealing their father's car when he tried to set the speed radar on fire, a court heard.

Abu Dhabi // A teenager has denied pouring petrol on a speed radar and setting it alight, the Appeals Court has heard.

S M, 19, was sentenced to three months in jail for breaching public security.

The Emirati is now on bail after serving a month in prison and denied the charge in court on Wednesday, where his lawyer asked the judge to release him.

Ali Al Kubeeri said the older brother was a student at a petroleum company’s training institute and the full prison term would “waste his future”.

“He most probably did not commit the offence and he already served one month in prison,” said Mr Al Kubeeri. “It should be enough to teach him a lesson.”

S M’s earlier court hearing was told that he and his brother, 16, stole their father’s car and drove it without a licence.

The younger brother was charged with driving without a licence, endangering other people’s lives and driving without permission.

It was not clear what happened with his case or when the incident took place.

A verdict is due to be delivered on January 15.
