Supporters pay $2,500 for 'historic journey' from Dubai to Pakistan with Musharraf

DUBAI // Pakistan's former president is inviting the public to travel and dine with him as he returns to contest the general election.

Pervez Musharraf is offering a one-way ticket on his flight and a dinner and reception in Dubai for US$2,500 (Dh9,200).

A website has been created to promote the deal, and officials at Mr Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League say there has  been global interest.

"We are getting emails and phone calls from around the world from people wanting to be a part of this," said a spokesman.

"We already have more than 60 members of the media coming from Pakistan to be on the same flight for when he returns. The travel date will be from anytime from March 17 to March 24.

"We are just waiting for the interim government to come in and then he will fly back to Pakistan."

Mr Musharraf's Facebook page has a link to the event website.

People can register for a variety of packages, such as a dinner, reception and photograph with Mr Musharraf for $1,000. A hand-shake and photo is $250.

Mr Musharraf announced his return to Pakistan at the start of this month. He said his political party would contest most, if not all, seats in the general election later this year.

He faces arrest if he returns on allegations he failed to provide enough protection for the former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007.
