ABU DHABI // A woman motivated by spite falsely reported her husband to police for raping their maid, a court heard yesterday.

“The wife filed a complaint against her husband all because of vengeance. She did not see what happened. She did not wait to question him, but had him arrested in the early morning in front of his three daughters,” lawyer Fayza Moussa told the Criminal Court.

Ms Moussa was defending her client MM, an Emirati, accused of raping his maid ET at his house in Bani Yas.

The court has previously heard from the maid who claimed her boss raped her when she took a cup of tea to his room. She testified that he tried to choke her before undressing and sexually assaulting her.

Yesterday the court heard that it was the man’s wife, FN, who informed police of the incident.

But Mrs Moussa claimed the wife was driven by “marital and family issues” and she also questioned the credibility of the maid’s testimony.

“There is no possible way of imagining how such an incident occurred,” she said. “The man is human, with two arms. How can he hold her hostage, choke her and undress both her and himself with two hands only?”

She also claimed that police officers did not have an arrest warrant and claimed there were “no external or internal signs of assault” on the maid’s body.

“Forensic reports did not find traces of his sweat or sperm on her body,” she added.

The man has denied a charge of rape.

A verdict was scheduled for October 7.
