DUBAI // A man said a speeding taxi nearly hit him, the driver insulted him and then assaulted him causing him a permanent disability, a court heard.

Indian H K, 36, said on October 27, 2012, he was leaving his home at about 4:30am going to work when a speeding taxi missed him by inches.

“He stopped exactly opposite my knees,” H K said.

“I screamed at the driver, asking him if he didn’t see and he responded with an inappropriate insult, so I insulted him back,” said the man, noting that at that point the driver, Pakistani W K, 37, got out of the taxi and kicked him on his back knocking him down.

H K said he was taken to hospital while unconscious after a passer-by called for an ambulance.

H K was treated for several slipped discs.

The taxi driver was charged with assault that led to an 8 per cent permanent disability and with issuing insults while the victim was charged with issuing insults.

Both men were not present at Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday to enter a plea.

The next hearing was set for February 9.
