DUBAI // Swords and knives were among more than 1,500 weapons seized by Customs officers after a failed attempt to smuggle them into the UAE.
Inspectors seized 1,520 knives, 30 swords, 110 holsters, 200 range boxes and 100 gun-cleaning tools from two shipments at Jebel Ali and Tecom Customs centre.
“The seizure of this large quantity of weapons reflects the ability of Dubai Customs inspectors to foil all smuggling attempts and to effectively combat new ploys and schemes adopted by the smugglers,” said Ahmad bin Lahej, director of Jebel Ali Customs centres department.
The weapons had been declared as sports products by the importing company, Mr bin Lahej said.
“We use the best global inspection techniques supported by the latest and most advanced scanners, which identify the nature of shipped items,” he said.
Mr bin Lahej said Dubai Customs had regularly stopped such weapons getting into the country, where they can be used in armed battles among young men.
“This is a regretful phenomenon that has been witnessed by our society in recent times,” he said.
“Therefore, we urge cooperation with all local and federal institutions involved in the combat of this phenomenon, to stop and eradicate it.”

Iftar programme at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Established in 1998, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding was created with a vision to teach residents about the traditions and customs of the UAE. Its motto is ‘open doors, open minds’. All year-round, visitors can sign up for a traditional Emirati breakfast, lunch or dinner meal, as well as a range of walking tours, including ones to sites such as the Jumeirah Mosque or Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.
Every year during Ramadan, an iftar programme is rolled out. This allows guests to break their fast with the centre’s presenters, visit a nearby mosque and observe their guides while they pray. These events last for about two hours and are open to the public, or can be booked for a private event.
Until the end of Ramadan, the iftar events take place from 7pm until 9pm, from Saturday to Thursday. Advanced booking is required.
