ABU DHABI // Five Emiratis and a GCC citizen have been ordered to perform community service, including cleaning mosques, sweeping roads, and working in libraries and petrol stations. General Prosecution in Abu Dhabi issued the sentences to the six men for reckless driving. In the first case the defendant was ordered to work as a petrol station attendant for three months after he was caught drifting his car in front of a children’s playground. Three of the other offenders were ordered to clean and provide maintenance at mosques while another was ordered to clean libraries. The last defendant was ordered to clean roads. Each of them will serve for one month. Prosecutors said community service was of benefit and was appreciated by the public. “They do not belittle those who do them, as opposed to the irresponsible behaviour of the accused offenders,” public prosecution said. The public service chosen for each offender is in accordance with his skills and educational background, to accommodate and reform their behaviour away from prison to protect their reputation and future. hdajani@thenational.ae
