ABU DHABI // The President, Sheikh Khalifa, has ordered the release of 1,010 inmates ahead of Ramadan.

Sheikh Khalifa said he hoped the pardon will give released inmates, who have met good conduct criteria, a fresh start at life and ease their families’ suffering, reported state news agency Wam.

Every year, the President and Rulers of the emirates pardon prisoners ahead of the holy month and order the settling of debts of those jailed for financial crimes.

In 2015, Sheikh Khalifa ordered the release of 879 prisoners with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, freeing 734 prisoners at reform and punitive institutions in Dubai.

Other rulers to follow suit last year include Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, the Ruler of Ajman, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu’alla, Umm Al Quwain’s Ruler, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ras Al Khaimah’s Ruler.

Ramadan is expected to begin on June 6.
