Sharjah lift fall kills worker

SHARJAH // An Indian worker died this morning after falling from a lift he was repairing at a residential building in Sharjah's Shuwayheen area, police say.

The accident happened about 9am when the 28-year-old Indian man fell from the top of the lift car, the building owner said. The lift then descended and crushed him at the bottom of the shaft.

"It was a big shock for me, especially that I was around," said the building owner, who did not wish to be identified. "I was in panic and didn't know what to start with, calling police and rescuers or attempting to remove the lift on him.

"I tried both with the help of other tenants. When the police arrived they asked us to step aside and their professional rescuers do the work."

A police spokesman said that the workman died at the scene and that his body had been carried to the police forensic laboratory for investigation.

He said the 10-storey building was more than 10 years old and had often needed repairs on its two lifts.
