Sharjah gets tough on street vendors

Street vendors will face fines of up to Dh6,000 as part of a clampdown by Sharjah Municipality.

Omar Al Sharji, director of the operations and inspection department at the municipality, noted that the number of street vendors increases in industrial areas on weekends and holidays.

He said the department had received dozens of complaints, although the February 4 deadline the municipality gave unlicensed vendors to cease their activities has brought down their numbers.

Sharjah municipal council approved a set of sanctions against street vendors that include fines ranging between Dh1,150 and Dh6,000 and confiscation of the vendor's vehicle.
