Saudi women: Driven to succeed

In advance of the mass demonstration planned in Saudi Arabia to demand the right for women to drive, we meet some Saudi women who are challenging traditional views.

Maha Taher, the chief executive and chairman of the Young Initiative Group, visits a single mother and her daughter in the old part of Jeddah. The organisation Maha co-founded provides Iftar dinners for disadvantaged people during Ramadan, and water and air conditioners to families in poorer areas of the city, as well as teaching services in local orphanages. Manal al-Sharif, a member of the Saudi action group Women2Drive, was recently released from jail after being arrested for posting a video on Facebook of herself driving.

Now the computer consultant says she is giving up her fight to get behind the wheel. As her compatriots prepare for a mass demonstration to demand the right to drive, we look at other areas where Saudi women are challenging traditional views.
