Salman Khan’s manager expects Dubai trip to go ahead

MUMBAI // Salman Khan’s manager has expressed confidence that the High Court will allow the Bollywood star to travel to Dubai for an awards ceremony.

Speaking to The National on Thursday, Reshma Shetty said: "We are positive he will get the permission by Monday May 25, from the court and he will reach Dubai on the due date."

Khan is scheduled to appear at the Arab-Indo Bollywood Awards at the Meydan Racecourse on May 29.

Earlier this month the Sessions Court in Mumbai found him guilty of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ and sentenced him to five years in jail.

The High Court granted him bail with a condition that he must seek the court’s permission every time he wants to leave the country.

The current application to travel to Dubai will be decided on next week.

If his bid is successful, the Dubai award ceremony will be Khan’s first international engagement after his conviction, which arose from a 2002 hit-and-run case where a man was killed and four others injured when Khan ran over them as they slept on a pavement in Mumbai.

The organisers of the awards ceremony insists that Salman Khan will be there.

“We already got the confirmation from his office last week. We are currently finalising the logistics,” said a spokesman for Varun, the event organiser.

“We approached him long before his conviction, about two months ago, and he gave his approval at the same time. We are glad that despite challenges, he is fulfilling his commitment.”

He said Khan will be arriving in Dubai on May 28, a day before the award function. “Right now we are finalising the place he will be staying during his Dubai visit,” he said.

His brother, Arbaaz Khan, also a Bollywood film actor, director and producer, will be on the award’s jury panel.

When contacted by The National, Salim Khan, father of Salman Khan, declined to comment, saying his son's legal team is dealing with the court application.
